Mrs. Maisel Character Analysis
One thing that caught my attention is the scene where Midge performs the opening act for Sophie Lennon on television. What stands out to me is a clear pattern: Midge Maisel is a very talented young woman with strong motivation, but her emotions often interfere with her professionalism.
Her jokes are quite crude, and I would argue that they touch on subjects that are not exactly refined. For instance, she repeatedly makes jokes about her parents’ sex life. While this may get laughs, it represents a lower form of humor—one that relies more on provoking base reactions than on intellectual sharpness.
Another example is her time working with Shy Baldwin. She made an inappropriate comment about him—although I didn’t fully understand at the time why it was so serious. Nevertheless, it damaged his reputation. Once again, she failed to recognize what was professionally appropriate, and as a result, she lost a major career opportunity. This clearly demonstrates that she was not yet a true professional and lacked the instinct for professional boundaries.
The television performance with Sophie Lennon was another major opportunity. Even if she personally disliked Sophie, serving as the opening act on television could have brought her fame, financial success, and potentially her own show in the future. However, she undermined this opportunity due to her ego and unprofessional attitude. The show was not about a personal conflict between performers—it was about delivering a successful performance. As a result, she failed once again, and this failure carried serious professional consequences.
That said, I still enjoy the show overall, although I dislike some of the crude language. While Midge Maisel is fundamentally a positive and compelling character, she clearly has significant professional and personal weaknesses.
