This morning, my wife woke up before me and went outside. A little later, I woke up and heard a loud noise coming from outside the house, as if something had fallen.
I looked out the window and saw that a blue plastic barrel had tipped over onto its side. I thought it was a bit strange and assumed my wife must be doing something in the yard. But then I wondered—why would she knock over the barrel?
At that moment, I heard another noise, this time from the porch. I checked the other window and saw that one of our flowerpots had fallen to the ground and broken.
We keep our flowerpots on the porch, and each pot sits in a saucer. When we water the plants, some water collects in the saucer, and because there’s a hole at the bottom of the pot, the plant can absorb that water gradually throughout the day.
So I shouted to my wife, “Hey, what are you doing out there?” and went outside to see what was going on.
But when I stepped out, she wasn’t there.
Instead, I found a cat.
It suddenly made sense. It was a hot morning, so the cat was probably looking for water. It must have noticed the water in the saucers—and maybe even in the barrel—but couldn’t reach it properly. I guess it tried to move the flowerpot to get better access, but instead, it knocked everything over.
In the end, the pot was broken, the barrel was overturned, and all the water was gone. And I’m pretty sure the cat didn’t even manage to get a drink.
